These figures are fixed gross annual salaries in France, with Paris and Île-de-France (Paris region) at the top of the ranges. Ranges followed by an asterisk (*) relate to leadership roles, where the package is usually supplemented by variable pay and equity (BSPCE, French startup stock warrants). The breakdown by role, seniority and location follows in the rest of the article.

The factors that shape a finance salary

Seniority and scope of responsibility

This is the number one factor. A finance professional moves from a production and analysis role (management controller, accountant) to an oversight role (financial controller, FP&A Manager), then to leading the whole function (Head of Finance or RAF, DAF, CFO). At each step, salary rises sharply, and all the more so as the scope widens: team management, consolidation, international subsidiaries, investor relations.

Company size and maturity

The same job title can mean very different things from one organisation to another. The pay of a DAF at a 50-person SME and that of a DAF at an 800-person mid-cap company (ETI) can be more than €50k apart. In a startup, the first finance leadership role often comes earlier in a career, with a lower fixed salary but with BSPCE.

Location

Paris and Île-de-France remain the market benchmark. Elsewhere in France, salaries are frequently 10 to 15% lower at equivalent seniority, and the gap can be wider for finance leadership roles or in the best-paying sectors. Fully remote roles sometimes come with an adjusted fixed salary.

Education and background

Finance remains a field where your entry path has a lasting effect on pay. Time spent at an audit firm, particularly a Big 4, or an accounting qualification such as the DSCG or a master’s in Accounting, Control and Audit (CCA), are recognised accelerators, especially for financial control, consolidation and finance leadership roles.

Data skills and tools

Candidates able to automate reporting and work with data (SQL, BI tools, ERP, planning tools such as Pigment or Anaplan) command the largest salary premiums. Today this is the main differentiating factor at equal seniority, particularly for management control and FP&A roles.

What is the salary of a Management Controller in France?

The Management Controller builds budgets, tracks variances between forecast and actuals and provides operational teams with performance indicators. It is the most common entry point into corporate finance. Salary starts at around €35,000 to €40,000 gross a year for a junior, and rises quickly with experience and increased responsibility.

Experience Gross annual salary
Junior (0-3 yrs) €35,000-45,000
Mid-level (3-7 yrs) €45,000-65,000
Head of Management Control (7+ yrs) €65,000-85,000

Hybrid profiles, who combine management control with data skills (SQL, BI, automation), consistently sit at the top of these ranges.

What is the salary of a Chief Accountant in France?

The Chief Accountant (Responsable Comptable) ensures the accounts are reliable, runs the monthly and annual closes and manages the accounting team. The role is usually reached after 3 to 5 years of experience, often at a chartered accountancy firm or in audit.

Experience Gross annual salary
Junior (3-5 yrs) €42,000-55,000
Mid-level (5-8 yrs) €55,000-70,000
Senior (8+ yrs) €70,000-85,000

Pay here is made up almost entirely of fixed salary, with variable pay remaining marginal. In startups and scale-ups, it can be supplemented by BSPCE or stock options.

What is the salary of a Finance Manager in France?

The Finance Manager oversees the company’s financial monitoring and acts as the link between accounting, management control and senior management. For new graduates, salaries range from €40,000 to €45,000 gross a year. With solid first experience, notably at a Big 4 audit firm or in an operational role, pay rises to €60,000 or €70,000.

Experience Gross annual salary
Junior (graduate) €40,000-45,000
Mid-level €60,000-70,000
Senior (5-10 yrs) €75,000-90,000

For this role, the gap between Paris and the rest of France is particularly pronounced.

What is the salary of a Financial Controller in France?

The Financial Controller ensures that financial information is reliable: closes, group reporting, process compliance and coordination with the statutory auditors. The role is closer to accounting and internal control than management control is, and rarely goes to new graduates.

Experience Gross annual salary
Junior (3-5 yrs) €45,000-65,000
Mid-level (5-10 yrs) €65,000-90,000

Beyond 10 years of experience, the financial controller usually moves into a Head of Finance or finance leadership role, with the corresponding pay.

What is the salary of an FP&A Manager in France?

The FP&A Manager owns financial planning and analysis: building the budget, rolling forecasts, modelling growth scenarios and tracking key indicators. It is one of the best-paid roles in the field within the tech ecosystem, because it combines financial rigour with a direct impact on strategic decisions.

Experience Paris / IDF (€) Other regions (€)
Junior / Mid-level (3-5 yrs) €55,000-70,000 €45,000-60,000
Mid-level / Manager (5-8 yrs) €70,000-95,000 €60,000-75,000
Senior / Head of FP&A (8+ yrs) €95,000-120,000+ €75,000-95,000

These figures are fixed gross annual salaries. They are frequently supplemented by a bonus, and by BSPCE in scale-ups.

What is the salary of a Head of Finance (RAF) in France?

The Head of Finance, often called RAF (Responsable Administratif et Financier), leads the finance function in an organisation that does not yet have a full finance department. The role covers accounting, management control, treasury and some administrative functions. Pay depends heavily on company size, managerial scope and the complexity of the role, particularly when the company operates internationally.

Experience Gross annual salary
Junior (3-5 yrs) €50,000-65,000
Mid-level (5-10 yrs) €65,000-90,000
Senior (10+ yrs) €100,000+

In scale-ups or for very experienced profiles, pay reaches €100,000 to €110,000 before moving on to DAF or CFO packages.

What is the salary of a DAF in France?

The Finance and Administration Director (DAF) runs all finance and administration functions: accounting, management control, treasury, legal and often general services. Pay depends above all on the size of the company and the breadth of the remit.

Context Paris (€) Other regions (estimated)
SME / first DAF role €60,000-80,000 €52,000-70,000
Experienced DAF €80,000-110,000 €70,000-95,000
ETI / scale-up €110,000-150,000 €95,000-130,000

What is the salary of a CFO in France?

The CFO (Chief Financial Officer) is the executive in charge of the finance function and a member of the executive committee. Beyond financial management, the CFO owns the financing strategy, fundraising and investor relations. A CFO’s salary starts at €80,000 gross a year and is generally above €100,000, particularly in scale-ups.

Level and organisation Gross annual salary
Junior CFO / startup (first CFO role) €75,000-100,000
Experienced CFO / SME (5-10 yrs) €100,000-150,000
Senior CFO / ETI and group (10+ yrs) €150,000-250,000+

A CFO with around ten years of experience earns on average between €90,000 and €130,000 in fixed salary, supplemented by variable pay linked to both company and individual performance.

DAF or CFO: what is the salary difference?

Both titles refer to the head of the finance function, but they do not cover exactly the same scope. The DAF has a broad administrative and financial scope (accounting, legal, administration) and is found mainly in SMEs and ETIs. The CFO, an English-language title adopted by startups and scale-ups, is more focused on financial strategy, fundraising and managing growth.

This difference in positioning shows up in pay: at a comparable company size, a CFO generally earns 15 to 25% more than a DAF, mainly because the role comes with investor exposure and a larger equity component.

How is a finance pay package structured?

Unlike sales functions, finance remains a field dominated by fixed pay. The structure of the package does, however, change markedly with seniority:

  • Operational roles (accounting, management control, financial control): fixed salary makes up most of the pay. Variable pay, where it exists, remains marginal, at around 5 to 10% of fixed salary.
  • Oversight roles (FP&A, Finance Manager, RAF): an annual bonus appears, usually between 10 and 15% of fixed salary, linked to company targets being met.
  • Finance leadership (DAF, CFO): variable pay rises to 15 to 30% of fixed salary, and equity becomes a central part of the package in startups and scale-ups. BSPCE can represent a significant share of the value of the role over several years.

Sectors and companies hiring in finance

Demand for finance talent is not uniform. Sector and company maturity both reshape pay scales:

  • Fintech and financial services: here, finance is at the heart of the product and the business model. Regulatory and compliance issues justify a premium for candidates who know these environments well.
  • VC-backed scale-ups: after several funding rounds, they structure their finance function and hire FP&A profiles and finance leaders able to deliver demanding investor reporting.
  • Industry and retail: these sectors see strong demand for industrial management control and financial control, with multi-site remits and a strong focus on costs.

The choice between a large group and a startup also weighs on the package: high fixed salary, profit-sharing and security on the large-company side; a more moderate fixed salary but equity and a broader scope on the startup and scale-up side.

How do you recruit finance talent?

Recruiting in finance is complex for several reasons:

  • Experienced candidates rarely change jobs and seldom apply on their own initiative.
  • The skills sought have broadened: proficiency in data and automation tools has become a selection criterion in its own right.
  • Job titles mean very different things depending on company size, which makes defining the need precisely critical before sourcing even begins.

For junior roles, the talent pool at audit and chartered accountancy firms remains the most effective channel. For experienced or finance leadership roles, headhunting becomes essential. It can then make sense to work with a Finance recruitment agency such as Licorne Society, which helps you identify and attract the best talent in the field.
